A full-bodied red with fine tannins and plenty of plum, milk-chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. It’s creamy and attractively textured. Rather flamboyant for the vintage. Generous and formed.

“The nose is aromatic, powerful and offers a fine grain as well as elegance. It reveals notes of wild blackberry, cornflower, small black fruits, small notes of crushed strawberry associated with touches of pepper, spices, lily as well as fine touches of camphor, a subtle hint of ripe hazelnut and mild tobacco. The palate is fruity, well-balanced and offers a beautiful definition, juiciness, gourmandize, a beautiful bright fruit, a beautiful tension as well as deepness, gourmandize, concentration and sense of the place. On the palate this wine expresses notes of bright Boysen berry, strawberry, small notes of violet, lily associated with touches of camphor, sugared mild tobacco, mocha/chocolate and fresh hazelnut. Good length. Tannins are elegant, racy and coating.”

Austerity tugs at the fruit on the attack, knitting it down and emphasising tannin over fruit. As it opens, the blackcurrant turns fleshy and polished, with plenty of chocolate and black truffle notes. This is good quality, full of high voltage impact. 2019 is the 400th anniversary since André de Faugères founded the property in 1619.

Coming from vines on the eastern side of the appellation, the 2019 Château Faugeres is a Merlot-dominated cuvée that includes small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is an incredibly consistent château, and the 2019 is beautifully done, revealing a saturated purple color, a great nose of blackberries, blueberries, violets, toasted spices, and candied orange, full body, and a plush, super rich, textured mouthfeel that keeps you coming back to the glass. Despite being a big, rich wine, it shows the lively, weightless style that's that hallmark of the vintage.
